How to include text from table into the list of titles
Hi,
I have a long document in word, about 100 pages, and that document includes a 30-page long table. In order to navigate efficiently within the document, I needed to put some titles in it, using the 'Reference' section of the Microsoft Word. But, I've found myself unable to turn text from the table into title. I mean, if I click in 'add text', it's added, I can see the change in the letters but, the title does not appear in the list on the left side of the document. I hope I'm making myself clear, but if I don't, maybe I can put some images here. Also, I would like to know if I can change how will the title appear on the left side of the document without changing the text itself. Like, I want to make '2005' a title, but make it appear as 'First Time'. I would be glad if someone could help me. |

The left side you are talking about is known as the "Navigation Pane."
See my article: Headings that do not show up in the Navigation Pane or in a Table of Contents (or in Cross-References / Hyperlinks). There is no way to have something appear as something different in the Navigation Pane than the way it appears in the document. You can have text with the font color of white which will not appear on a white background but will appear in the Navigation Pane. Also, take a look at use of the StyleRef Field. I do not know what you mean by "turn text from the table into the title." Here is how to add images: How to attach a screenshot or file in this forum. Please note that it is important to not have the images scroll horizontally off the screen here. |

Word's navigation pane ignores headings sitting inside table cells. Interestingly, this issue extends to the file when it is saved in PDF format. In Acrobat the 'Navigation Pane' equivalent is called 'Bookmarks' and the headings which were in Word tables will be missing there too. You'll have to manually add those bookmarks in a PDF editor if you need them there.
However, a table of contents WILL include the headings which happen to be sitting in tables - that is the only alternative that I know of.
