A new section number despite no section break existing
I have a weird problem.
This is a long word doc where I have rearranged and moved parts of text around. To control the headers and footers the document has multiple sections. After my section 2, I now have a "section 3" which says it is a "First Page Header - Section 3" This is messing up the subsequent continuous page numbers in the footer. So I turned the code view on to find the section break and delete it, but it does not exist! I've looked repeatedly and can find no section break! There is a page break but no section break. This is also not a text I have moved around. How do I delete this non-existend section break? I just want it to continue with section 2 without a section break. Thanks. |

That it says Section 3 means that it is the third section. There are two section breaks before it. Period. There is no non-existent section break.
Any time you change the number of columns or margins in a document, you add at least one section break. They sometimes are at the very end of a line and all but invisible. Here is my chapter on Sections / Headers and Footers in Microsoft Word (Ribbon Versions). It is helpful to set your status bar to show the section number. It is often unnecessary to change sections to change headers and footers. See StyleRef Field. If you want, make a copy of your document and delete all but the problem pages so that it still is showing Section 3 where you do not expect. Attach that excerpt to a post here. You can delete most of the text if you want. The following article has information about clearing confidential or proprietary information from a sample document. Why a sample file is important for troubleshooting. How to do it. In this forum, though, you can attach the file to your post, unlike in the Microsoft Community Forum. If nothing else works, see Toolkit for Advanced Management of Headers and Footers. References that may help with your project: |

My guess is that your document contains tracked revisions and you are not showing the deleted tracked content. If you track the deletion of a section break then it still 'exists' in the document.
Also, it is easier to spot section breaks by changing to Draft view.

Finally found it!!!!
At the end of section 2, on the last line at the end of text that reached to the right margin was a "========" with no label. It turned out to be the invisible section break. Backspacing beyond it did not delete it. But selecting it specifically and deleting it removed it and section 3 became a continuation of section 2. I replaced it with a simple page break and now all is well. Thanks guys. |

As a tip to help find these in the future, make sure your Status Bar is showing the section number in the bottom left corner. Right click the status bar to choose that option.

You are welcome.
Note that the section break may well have contained formatting and/or headers or footers that were lost by deletion. Section break formatting applies to the text before the break. |

For future reference, note that switching to Draft view often makes it easier to see all section breaks.
