Default Combining titles in a TOC

I am using Office 365. I am trying to create a TOC. I have " Chapter 1" on the first line of my page and the title of the chapter on the second line of the page. Is there a way to have them both on one line in the Table of Contents? Now when I create a TOC they show up as two lines making the TOC very long and difficult to read.

You can insert a line break (Shift+Enter) into the heading. By default, the line break would display as a space in the table of contents.

Stefan's advice will work if everything is in the same style on different lines.

Otherwise, see TOC Tips and Tricks by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP. In particular, look at TOC Entries that don't appear in the document.
