Update Table of Contents with updated Headings for Chapters and Sections
Hello, I have applied style to my chapter, section, subsection and subsubsection headers. When I generate a TOC, I get the section numbers from the automatically generated TOC showing up (please see attached image). How can I remove these section numbers and just show my headers. See How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly.
This is what your current list looks like: 00 deleteme 10.png Only two of your numbering levels are attached to styles and your list is not named. Your TOC is the following field: { TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \u } You mean "headings" not "headers." See : What is the difference between headings and headers? Hello,
I have updated my word document as per your suggestions by having my headings attached to a multilevel list called "Headings". I have uploaded the updated document. I read through your links but still cannot figure out how to remove the initial section numbering in the TOC. I looked at the switch and I do see what you mentioned. Is this switch what I will use to modify the TOC to remove the section numbers? Thanks! |

Remove the numbering which is attached to your TOC 1, TOC etc. styles. These styles should not be numbered themselves. The TOC styles determine the display of the headings inside the TOC.

You do not want the name of your list (currently "Headings") to be something so easily confused with the styles named Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. Try instead, myList or listHeadings.
Stefan has pointed out the confusion that can result by attaching numbering to the TOC styles rather than to the underlying styles being used in the document. For some reason, you have your TOC 1 style based on your Heading 2 style. Change that to No Style or Normal. You will want to do the same with your other TOC styles. |
