Style Changing Between Pages
Hi,
I've got a long document (850+ pages) that I've applied a couple of styles to both of which I created. They are identical with the only difference being one of them has an indent on the first line set at 0.8 cm. Both are justified, same font and size, same line spacing etc. The problem I'm having is that the first paragraph is extending to the left further than the proceeding paragraphs, I've attached a screen shot which shows the issue quite well. As I stated above, the only difference between them is the first line indent (or so I believe). The second issue I have is that the paragraphs on the next page do go as wide as the non-indented paragraph. I've also included a screen shot of this problem. So in this case I'm getting justification on say page one shorter than the justification on page two. Page three is the same as page one etc. I'm only using the two styles and it has me stumped as to what the issue could be. Is there anybody out there with a possible solution please? Cheers. Check your page Setup settings. In the Page Setup dialog (for each section) you will see that there is a setting called Gutter and another one called Gutter Position. This typically is set to the left/right of a page to allow for extra space when double-sided printing needs extra space for the binding join. You can also set it at the top/bottom if you were binding across the top.
The result of a non-zero Gutter setting on the left is that alternate even and odd pages have extra space on one side or the other. With your other document "Issue 2", your first paragraph is set to full justification whilst the others are left aligned. I would presume that you could assign the same paragraph alignment to rectify the alignment differences.

Hi Andrew,
Mate, many thanks for that. I'll check it out and let you know how I get on. Appreciate your time and answer. Cheers. Steve |

I've attached two more screen shots of the two different styles, one named Paragraphs and the other First Paragraph. As you can see, both are fully justified so I'm stumped there (again). My gutter position is set to "left" with a non-zero setting in the other box. So, should there be some setting in that box or is that correct? Cheers again. |

If you want the same size margins on odd and even pages then you need to set the gutter size as 0.
If you posted a sample document (instead of screenshots) I can give you an exact answer. Otherwise I have to guess at what your issue is. You are showing me pictures of style definitions but are not showing me the actual content settings. Your paragraphs might have those styles applied but if they also have local paragraph indentation applied it would override the style settings. You can select all your problem paragraphs and remove local formatting by pressing Ctrl-Q and Ctrl-Space. Then double check the styles that are applied. It is also possible (but less likely) that there is a floating white/invisible graphic either on the page or in the header/footer that is pushing content over. Again, without having the actual document, I can't tell you exactly what the issue might be.

Style Changing Between Pages
Hi Andrew,
Okay, I've attached a sample copy of the first few pages of the document. Hopefully you can see from it where the problem is. Cheers. |

Set the 'Paragraphs' style to fully justified and turn OFF the Mirror Margins setting.

How to attach a screenshot or file in this forum.
Please do not put your screenshot inside a document and attach the document. That slows everything down. I edited your initial post to do this. I invite you to do the same with your second post. Please attach a sample document with the problem (not a document with a screenshot of a document). |

Hey Andrew,
I think I'm chasing my tail here and sorry about the frustration levels. The "multiple pages" under "Page Setup" is set to "Normal", not "Mirror Margins" so I'm assuming that means Mirror Margins is off. Everywhere I can justify, whether it be in the paragraphs style or page set up is set to justified so I'm assuming that is fully justified. I'm happy to do this via email if it makes things easier but I simply cannot see anywhere where the document is not justified except where it shouldn't be such as headings. Cheers. |

The Mirror Margins I'm talking about is a setting in 'Paragraphs' style's paragraph format settings.
Above should read as Mirror Indents. See Charles' post and graphic below It is not a page setup thing in this case - it is a paragraph attribute.

Again, you would want to be editing the Style's paragraph settings. |

Thanks Charles, you are correct. I didn't pay enough attention to the name of the check box.
I will amend the earlier posts to remove the earlier confustion (and add to it down here)

Hey guys,
Well, finally got there to your patience and persistence, I appreciate the time and effort you've put into this. I didn't even notice the "Mirror Indents" box at all but that sorted the problem out. I've learnt a lot about Word lately. Cheers. |

Like you, I had never noticed the Mirror Indents checkbox, in more than 30 years of using Word! Thank you, Andrew, for bringing it to our attention.

Style Changing Between Pages
Well that's a relief knowing that sort of thing catches out others more experienced and qualified.
I've been using Word since the 90's but have never really delved into the guts of it, there's a lot to learn. Cheers. |
