Default Custom table of Contents with Caption labels and more

Hi

Is it possible to make a custom Table of Contents which will include all the Pictures labels and numbering and some extra text for every picture that's different from the one in caption.

The exact "problem" is: I have text with a lot of pictures. Every picture is numbered (with "Insert Caption") and every picture had its own description. On the end of the document, I want to insert some kind of Table of Contents with all the numbered pictures in it (just "Picture 1" and so on) and with newly added text for each picture (https link to that picture) which will not be deleted while I update the Table after adding more pictures in the text.

Or, maybe even better, that I add a link to the specific picture in "Alt Text" and then make a Custom Table of Contents with picture numbering and alt text.

Thank you all in advance!

What you are asking for is not built into Word.

Word can do a LOT with Tables of Figures / Tables of Contents, which are really the same TOC field with different switches.
This is especially true with different styles such as the Caption style, TC fields, StyleRef fields, and switches in the TOC field.

Review these links.
You can create such a field using a combination of StyleRef fields inside a TC field. Such a field, once constructed, can be saved as AutoText, a Quick Part, or some other Building Block, or even as formatted AutoCorrect.

Here is a temporary link to a document demonstrating a Table of Contents that uses TC fields that have StyleRef fields.
Dropbox - TOC Sample using StyleRef with bullet added for numbered headings.docx

That document was produced in this thread.

You would in the TC field include a StyleRef to the Caption and additional text you want to appear in your Table of Figures.

The only way you can do anything like that with a Table of Contents in Word is if the full text of what you want to appear in the Table of Contents occurs in whatever you link the Table of Contents to. In this case, that means your caption text would need to include the https links for the pictures.

Or, you could use TC fields that include both the Caption text and the extra material. (Doing this is a lot of work.)

It does not have to be a ToC method. Anything that can be automated and give the result I want is OK (ToF, Source Manager, ...) Currently I'm using Cross-reference, and I'm adding http links one by one (page numbers is not important at all), and the end result is (the one that I am after):

Picture 1: https://...
Picture 2: https://...

... so that I also have a link inside the document to a picture (because I have 4-5 pages with http links, and when I need to change the picture or insert a new one in between, I have a problem to find which http link I need to change)

It would be VERY nice when that could be automated in such a way that the link is "in picture" (right click on picture → "Insert link", or alt text, whatever) and the list in the end of the document is updating when a picture is changed or added.

Also, I'm opened to other suggestions, if there are better ones.

P.S. I have a little experience with ToC and other Field codes, as I was started to using them not that long ago.

ToF and ToC use the same field with a \c switch for the ToF.
You can cross-reference to a Table or Figure. This is actually a cross-reference to a hidden bookmark for the Caption.

Fields have been and will likely continue to be an integral part of Word. Paul Edstein (macropod) knows them far better than do I. He has a number of articles about them "pinned" in this forum.

Again, with TC fields, you can have anything you want appear in a TOC without it appearing in the document. However, the TC field has to be in the document; it is simply hidden. You can use StyleRef fields to repeat things that are in the Caption inside the TC field and add things inside the TC field that do not appear in the Caption.

For a variation on this, see this thread: Use short cross-reference to Appendix in text but show the full title - Microsoft Community

Well, it was you who stipulated:

Word has no methods that automatically update such lists other than TOAs, TOCs, Indexes and Bibliographies, and none of them work the way you want.

It seems I'm gonna stick with Cross-reference, with manually adding the links at the end of the document.

Thank you all for help.
