Question Comments being hidden when non-printing and formatting text is hidden

Hi

I suspect this is a simple fix, but I'll be buggered if I can work it out, and Ive already spent too much time on this. And it's Bugging the Crap out of me!

I have been sent a long document to review, comment and amend for publication and it contains a load of Comments by the author and several other reviewers which I need to resolve.

The comments do not show by the normal route of ensuring that Review / Show Markup / and ensuring the Comments item is ticked. The only way the comments show is to toggle the Show/ Hide paragraph marks button on the Paragraph group on the Home tab.

Is there a way to make the Comments show without all the non-printing characters as well? It's a preference thing, but I find all the non-printing stuff distracting.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Are your comments perhaps simply hidden text rather than actual Word comments?

Hi Charles

These are definitely comments - or at least the few I have started adding - and like all the others they toggle on and off with the Paragraph Show/ Hide button...

I don't think I have ever come across this before.

One thought that has struck me since my initial post - I'm not sure what version of Word this doc was produced in, but being a government doc, it's possible its an old 2007 or older version, and I'm wondering if these are somehow inline comments as opposed to the newer, normal Balloon comments.... did they used to hide with the toggle of the Paragraph show/hide button??

I'm not an expert on this, so could be way off the mark.

Comments are comments, no matter how displayed. The method of display is on the user's computer settings, not in the document.
What happens if you show the reviewing pane?

Hi Charles - thanks for the link - I was struggling on how to upload screenshots

First is how things appear when the Show / Hide toggle is 'off'

And below when the Show / Hide is set to 'on'

I hope this helps.

Sorry if the images are a little big - I work on huge monitors so its a little difficult telling how things will appear on other machines - if they are an issue let me know and I will minifi them!

Thanks again
Dave

PS - The comment added by me - was done using the Add comment button on the review tab.

An actual Word document with the problem would help me.

BTW, I resized your document images to 1200 px wide.

I am unable to reproduce this in Word 2010 or 365.
Again, a sample document would help.

Is it like this if you start Word in safe mode?
