Word 2007: Unable to change character style, when using a linked Char/Para style format
Hi,
Just experienced yesterday. I defined a linked 'Quote' style many years ago that is now refusing to change the character style, instead it just changes the whole paragraph. Under the 'Modilfy style' dialogue the 'Style type' is greyed out. I'm currently working on a massive book with 15 sections (separate files) and multiple chapters, with the same thing being experienced across all the the files, so I assume the stylesheet has got screwed. I suppose creating a new style, select all instances of the old style and then reformatting should work, but I would like other thoughts before I do this as it's a massive change that could create further problems. Thanks |

Can you verify that a different character style works in the same situation?
There is a setting to "Disable Linked Styles" which could have been turned on - check the bottom of your Styles Pane.

I suspect you have spotted the problem Andrew.
I routinely keep that checked. I dislike linked styles and prefer to keep my paragraph and character styles separated. Here is part of the reason: Headings that do not show up in the Navigation Pane or in a Table of Contents (or in Cross-References / Hyperlinks) |
