Question How to add dedicated enumeration (e.g. for formulas)

Hi.

I want to add an automated enumerator of which's object can be used just anywhere.
E.g.

A TITLE
some text
Test 1: foo
Test 2: bar

ANOTHER TITLE
some text
Test 3: baz
Test 4: qux

Test 5: ...

So the number behind "Test" shall get increased automatically.
How do I do that? It shall be a unique enumerator that goes through the entire document (e.g. as used for enumerate formulas in professional documents)

Thanks for your inputs.

Excel is better than Word for increasing numbers automatically so are you able to use Excel for whatever it is you are doing?

It would need you to omit the ":" after the test number so in cell A1 you would type "Test 1" and in cell B1 you would type "foo".
If you then drag cell A1 downwards you will see the number increasing leaving you to populate cells in column 'B' manually.

Hi wiganken
Thx for your reply. I made an approach using Excel as it would be better suited having organised a list of test cases, too.
Unfortunatelly dealing with integraed figures (that are necessary because very helpful) into an excel document makes excel being a super dummy program as well. This on the other hand handles word much better.
Using google docs and adding some plugins deals perfectly well with this issue. So I thought word must have this, too, somewhere, somehow.

Word can automate this in two main ways:
- Seq field (see 10 steps to creating inline numbering in a Word document - TechRepublic)
- Outline lists (see How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Word 2007 and Word 2010 | ShaunaKelly.com)

Either method would work so you can make your choice as to what you prefer to use.

If these formulas are equations created in Word, you can add captions.
Insert a Caption

These are automatically numbered and can be picked up in a Table of Equations.
The Caption feature uses the SEQuence Field previously mentioned.
If you are using a SEQuence Field on its own, you can save it as an AutoText entry for easy repetition.

For instructions on how to use Captions for Equations and have the caption appear on the side, see Section 7 Captions and cross-references | Microsoft Word for the Social Sciences
