Default Customizing document content based on choices made

Hi folks,

One of my users writes:

I’m working on developing a template for informed consent forms. Basically the studies can be in children or adults and the forms signed by the patients, parents, or caregivers. Do you know if there is a way to create form where if a field is filled out or chosen, all subsequent language is applied to the appropriate person?

For example, if it’s a parental consent, you choose that somewhere at the beginning, and then all language in the form is update to “your child”.
I suggested just writing 3 different templates but they're trying to avoid doing so.

I've done this before in a different setting but I had to automate it using VBA forms. That's an option here but I'd prefer to give them something with less development & maintenance.

Can anyone give me ideas on ways to implement this?

TIA,

Beej

It could be done with fields, but I would not say there is less maintenance with that. Just no userforms or macros required.

My suggestion would be to have the optional language in AutoText entries and use IF fields and AutoText fields to pull in the optional text. That way you can standardize language and to modify it you update the AutoText entries rather than the fields. It is still going to be a maintenance headache. Also, the IF fields would need to be updated. (And I would likely recommend a macro to do that.)

A key question is whether everyone using it is using Word 2007 or later.

Is the variation limited to you/your child? If so have a look at this thread for a possible mapped content control solution
