Hi. Is it possible to build a TOC with bullets but the document from which the TOC was created is without the bullets?
Like:
TOC
I. Heading1


I.1 Heading2

• aaa
• bbb
• ccc

Document
I. Heading1
I.1 Heading2
Style1
aaa
bbb
ccc

Yes, you just add the bullet to the style of the TOC level where you want to see it.

I'm sorry, but where do I add the bullet? I could not find an option in the 'modify' that allows adding text or bullet before the title.

Usually, but not always, the styles in the TOC are set to 'Automatically Update' so all you need to do is put your cursor in one of the paragraphs in the TOC and click the bullets button. If the other instances of that style immediately show the bullet then your job is done.

If not, modify the style and choose the Format button in the bottom left to see the numbering option (which reveals the bullets option).

What I had done as a workaround was to modify the style then make the dot bullets 'invisible'. If I do that in the TOC, the added bullet would be erased during update.

Look into using TC fields, possibly with a StyleRef Field to bring in the heading without the numbering.

Thank you for the link Charles. It's quite a read and I feel overwhelmed. I will get back once I got the solution to my TOC problem.

Here is a sample document that may help. The sample document is also attached but the link end up being to a later version if I make changes to it.

It has all the component parts. including the TOC field, the TC field and the StyleRef field.


Here is a screenshot showing TOCs created using Styles/outline levels and one created TC fields. I added bullets to the one using TC fields.


The headings in the document are autmatically numbered using the techniques shown in How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly.

The TC field looks like this:

Can you post a sample document showing your heading and TOC styles? I can't work out why this is being difficult and need to see what your styles are set to.

Andrew, take a look at my sample. (Use link or attachment above.) I am pretty sure that what Marcia is after is to have auto-numbered headings in the document and to have those same headings appear as bulleted items in the TOC without the numbering. It is not simple, but it can be done. The sample is a demonstration.

You can add bullets to the TOC styles, yes. However if the TOC is based on those heading styles, it will also include the numbers. You can, though, use StyleRef fields based on those same styles incorporated in TC fields and base the TOC on the TC fields rather than the styles. The StyleRef does not pull in the numbering.

The text Marcia posted in the first message didn't include numbers on the third level headings (aaa bbb and ccc). If she posts a document we can see if she meant to include numbered headings and convert them to bullets.

I think this is what Andrew suggested at the beginning, but he didn't know that you already had a whited-out bullet in the original text. Yes, the sample document helped clarify what is needed.

I'm reading your paper on headers and footers as my knowledge is limited to drawing two very close parallel lines, one thicker than the other.
