Default How do I remove header and footer

When I open word doc it is automaticaly has a header and footer. I have tried to remove these but it wont let me. The Rwemove header/footer box is x'ed out. This is in word 07

Thank you for any help.

Is the document in a protected mode?

No it happens to every new doc I open.
