I have files that were professionally prepared for a publisher; I've edited such files many times. In these 20 files, Track Changes correctly shows when roman type has been changed to italic (in balloon) but does not show when italic has been changed to roman. Author has to see changes and he overused italics so this is a problem. Yes, Track Changes options are correctly set. Have never seen this before. Ideas? Thanks.

Cross-posted in the Word IT Pro category at the Microsoft Q & A site: inconsistent behavior by track changes - Microsoft Q&A.
Here, removing italic formatting from a text range shows the tracked change as "not italic."
