Default Hyperlink issues, W-2016

I apologize in advance for the length, but I wanted to be sure to include all pertinent information so I don’t waste your time.
----------------------------
Windows 8.1 with Office (word) 2016.

For several months now, I have been having an issue with random hyperlink failures in MS Word.

Please note:
-- Links which will not open in word, will open in all other locations and devices (Google docs, public forums etc.)

-- Using original web links, DropBox or Tiny URL, makes no difference.
-- I have searched and tried every fix suggested, including regedit, to no avail.
-- I have reinstalled both 8.1 and 2016 Office multiple times.
------------------------------
Following is a small sample of good and bad links.

Sample links that do not open in Word:
Dropbox - Breach .jpg - Simplify your life
Dropbox - Spy Hop.jpg - Simplify your life
Dropbox - 4 E W .png - Simplify your life
Dropbox - Naiad .png - Simplify your life
Dropbox - Kaluta .jpg - Simplify your life
Dropbox - Eclipse.PNG - Simplify your life

Thank you.

Could your security software be blocking some links?

Thanks for your reply.

If you mean my AV, then no, I have temporarily disabled and even uninstalled it with no change.

I have looked at all the Word Options Trust Center Settings but I don’t know what I am looking at.

This is a typical example.
The following link will not open in Word, but will open in all other applications (public forums like this one, email, WhatsApp, MMS etc.) on the same PC.
Vancouver Island Whale Watching Highest Orca Sightings British Columbia

The attached images show the warnings, when clicked in Word.

Try rebooting your router. This sometimes fixes issues like this.

"Try rebooting your router. This sometimes fixes issues like this."

Thanks, I've done that. Nada.
I would think if that were the case, it would be an issue with all other applications, not just Word.

Could it be a specific Office Update issue?

Why just Office?

I can't think of anything else but I notice you are on Windows 8. This OS is known to have issues and it was replaced by Windows 8.1. You can upgrade to Windows 10 for free and this may fix the issue since the OS works differently.

You may be need to update to Windows 8.1 first before upgrading to windows 10.

Please see the following from MS:
***I have no 9.0 subkey

Cannot locate the Internet or proxy server when selecting hyperlink in Office - Office | Microsoft Docs

Error message when selecting hyperlink in Office: "Cannot locate the Internet server or proxy server"

Applies to: Word for Office 365, Word 2019, Word 2016, Word 2013 (and others).

Workaround
Add the Internet Subkey to the registry and set the Value data.

To work around this issue, either add the ForceShellExecute subkey, if it is not present, and set the Value data, or if it is present, set the Value data of the ForceShellExecute subkey.
1. Quit any programs that are running.
2. Select Start, and then select Run. Type regedit in the Open box, and then select OK.
3. In Registry Editor, browse to one of the following subkeys (create the keys if they do not exist):
o For a 64-bit version of Office on a 64-bit version of Windows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\C ommon\Internet
4. Make sure the Internet subkey is selected. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then select DWORD Value. Add the following registry value:
Value Name: ForceShellExecute
5. Double-click ForceShellExecute, and then set the Value data to 1. Select OK.
6. On the Registry menu, select Exit.

I am not entirely comfortable messing with regedit, so any instructions should be very easily understood.
Image shows subkeys in my Office 2016.

It sems that the Key you show refers to "9.0\C ommon". Notice the space. There should be no spaces in reg keys and also the 9.0 may refer to old software. My PC registry only shows 15.0 and 16.0. For a modern Office version I would have expected reg changes to apply to 16.0 subkey.

You are correct not to attempt registry changes unless you are sure what you are doing since you could wreck your PC.

Interesting comments. The linked article is dated July 17, 2020, so not that old.

I think the "space" you see was created by lack of page room while doing a cut & paste. The linked article shows no space.

For a 64-bit version of Office on a 64-bit version of Windows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\C ommon\Internet

The email notification of your previous post (#8) included the comment, which I assume you edited out: "First your image does not show registry subkeys. They are folders on your C: drive. Registry Keys and Subkeys look different (see picture)."

To be clear, I get that. My image shows the folders yes, but with no 9.0 folder, the subsequent subkey doesn't exist.

Keys, Sub Keys and DWORDS can be created if you are careful: -

1. Note that reg changes are done in real time. This means that the change happens as-you-type and you do not get the chance to 'discard changes' so be careful.
2. Save the registry file just in case or do a full backup before doing any reg changes.
3. R-Click on 'Office' and select New/Key and type in the Key name '9.0' (ignore ' ' marks) and OK it.
4. R-Click on new key '9.0' and select New/Key and type in the Key name 'Common' and OK it.
5. R-Click on new key 'Common' and select New/Key and type in the Key name 'Internet' and OK it.
6. R-Click on new key 'Internet' and select New/DWORD (32-bit) Value and type in the DWORD name 'ForceShellExecute' (No spaces) and OK it.
7. Double-click on new DWORD 'ForceShellExecute' and change its value to 1 then OK it.
8. Exit the registry editor.

Note that changes need a restart to take effect. That's 'Restart' not 'Shutdown'.

wiganken, thank you.
I got up the courage to follow your very clear instructions at post 11.

99% of the problem is solve.
The only remaining glitch is, a very few links still don't open with a click. The Reeor box pops up, but when "OK" is clicked, it takes me to the sight.
The second box shown as an image in post 3 "Unable to open..." no longer appears.

A small irritation I can live with, unless you recognize something else.

Again, thank you for your help.

There is nothing that can be done regarding "Certificate errors" since this is the website you are trying to visit not updating their security certificate.

Glad that you are 99% sorted and can now carry on. Good luck.

Yes and I guess it's a 100% fix, if the remaining issue is not at my end.

Will I need to repeat this process if I do a Windows or Office reinstall?
Tanks again for your help and patience.

Will you need to repeat? I don't know but the safest way is to create regular (once per month?) backup images of your C: drive.

For this purpose I use 'Macrium Reflect' Free edition. This allows you to create an external bootable drive for recovery purposes as well as creating 'Full' images and 'Differential' images. In my case this external drive is a 500 GB SSD which allows me to use it for booting into Windows PE mode as well as storing my images. USB sticks are not as safe as SSDs so I do not recommend using USB sticks for this purpose.

There are other free backup software programs out there so I suggest you do some research. I tried AOMEI Backupper but I found MR better in my case. Others may beg to differ.
