how to stop word from re-formatting
I am writing dialogue for a play. As soon as I type . . . Word converts into a very close 3 stops. I would like them to stay spaced out so that they are more visible. Monospaced like. Can I turn of this conversion? Also, if I type 3 dashes, I get a complete line. Not what I want. I would like to be in control not have word take over from me.
I doubt this is possible though. P.S Figured out (...) but not (---) or (1/2) |

These will be found in your Autocorrect settings. File/Options/Proofing/Autocorrect. Check the Autoformat and Autoformat as You Type tabs.

I have unchecked Fractions (1/2) and Hyphens (---) in tha Autoformat tab but it makes no diffrence.
I did delete (...) from the Auto correct tab and that one worked. Autoformat and autoformat as you type both have (---) and (1/2) (1/2) NOW sorted (---) still annoying. |

Still having problems with autoformat (---). I thought I could get around this by (***).
No Microsoft have got that one to. Hilighting it and atempting to dealt does not work. |

In your AutoCorrect Options, there is a tab at the top of the dialog for "AutoFormat as You Type." Uncheck the option for borders.

Presumably you mean …, which is an elipsis. The . . . is a hangover from typewriter era, when the elipsis was typed that way.

I assume you are using the 'Normal' "Style". Try using the 'No Spacing' "Style" but see following caveat: -
I created a template whereby the "Style" is 'No Spacing' and if I launch Word from a shortcut pointing to this 'No Spacing' "Style" template then I get the result you are after. Interestingly it does not work if I launch Word using the normal.dotm template and then change from 'Normal' style to 'No Spacing' style. |

No. The problem is typyping 3 dashes on a line. Hit enter and you get a solid line
I have solved the problem of (...) and I have solved the problem of fractions (1/2) I have unchecked Hyphons in the Auto format tab and the as you type tab. The problem does not go away. I can't find any other check boxes. There has to be a way out of this. |

The link Charles Kenyon provided contains the answer but here is another way of achieving the same thing. Good luck: -
The ‘line’ gets created after typing 3 dashes then pressing ‘Enter’ but it is not a normal ‘line’. It is a border line. It is annoying that this forum does not allow me to upload a picture from my PC because "a picture explains a thousand words" as the saying goes but, if you click on the symbol that appears on LHS you will see 3 options: - 1. Undo border line 2. Stop automatically creating border lines 3. Control AutoFormat options If you select option 2 then that should sort it for you. |

Actually, it does... via the paperclip symbol on the 'Advanced' screen.

Thank you although your terminology confused me. I do not see anything that shows 'Advanced' screen but I worked out what you meant. What you mean is that I should click on "Post Reply" rather than "Quick Reply" and, yes this screen has the paperclip symbol that allowes me to insert an image from my PC. I had been using the 'Quick reply' option. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

To the OP - Here is that picture that I did not know how to upload previously. You can see the small icon on the left of the 'line'.

At the bottom of the 'Quick Reply' screen is a 'Go Advanced' button...

The small icon to the left of the line is telling you that AutoCorrect did this. When that is showing, pressing Ctrl+Z will undo the line insertion.
