Revision/issue numbers in footer area
Hi,
My job requires me to convert many manuals from Frame Maker to MS Word. 99% of the functions, I've had no issues converting over, but have a couple of things that I'm not happy with. This is one of them. In Frame Maker, every single page has it's own revision number and date in the footer. I believe it's just a text box that the Document controller has put there, and updates each time they edit the page. I've done the same, and put a text box that hovers over the text and is placed in the footer area of every page. The problem is, it's anchored to text and if that text is moved/changed/deleted, it also affects the floating text box. If I put the text box in the footer itself, it duplicates throughout the entire section, even though I have "same as previous" turned off. Is there a better way of doing this? Does anyone have any suggestions? |

Converted documents are a real pain to edit.
Framemaker is not Word is not Framemaker is not pdf is not Wordperfect... |

The documents are being hand converted - not automatically converted. I'm basically redoing the doc in Word. The finished control copy will be in word, but the recipients will only receive copies of the PDF, with most still having printed copies.
While they are paying me to convert their 300 documents (some with over 700 pages), I'm happy to sit here, do my best, and nut out what the best process is. |

I would put the 'default' revision number in the footer. This then allows you to only need the floating text box on those pages which have suffered a revision. That revision should be attached to the paragraph where the revision actually occurred.
Floating text boxes can float in a wide variety of ways. You can attach it to a paragraph but have it appear at the fixed location on that the page where that paragraph appears. If you select the text box and go to the text box's Layout Position and set its position RELATIVE to the PAGE.

You can also use Frames for this. Marginal Text by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP
I will generally use paste special into a new document, pasting as plain text and formatting to match source using styles. |
