How Do I Get Rid of Unwanted Underlining?

Sometimes, a whole line of underlining appears and when I try to delete it, it does not go away. If I try to delete the spaces above and below it, it still doesn't go away. How can I get rid of it?

Your description suggests you've managed to apply a bottom border, rather than an underline. Use the borders tool. You can remove borders via the Borders button in the Paragraph group on the Ribbon's Home tab.

There is no Borders button or Paragraph group in my version of Word. So I still can't get rid of that border.
