Default Changing Line Spacing W/O Altering Line Numbering

I work with court documents that are line numbered 1-25. Is there a way to change my double-line spacing to single without altering the line numbering? Every time I try to accomplish this, the line numbering also goes to single. Thanks!

Any way? Probably.
A simple practical way, I'm not so sure.

What is the purpose of line numbering that does not number the lines?

Many years ago, line numbering was done by putting numbers in a borderless textbox in the header. This is very klutzy but those numbers would not change because they are simply a fixed text feature, not dynamic.

P.S. I am a lawyer.

You could put the single-spaced text into a borderless textbox formatted as 'in front of text', with an essentially empty double-spaced paragraph behind it containing just however many manual line breaks you need to maintain the desired numbering.

You can anchor a text box with typed (static) line numbers to the page header so that the text box repeats on all pages.

Okay. Back to this problem. I type into the court "box," if you will, 25 lines per page. I have to have 25 lines (you're an attorney, so you know what the page looks like). When I go to my last page (certification), some of the lines are single spaced, which throws the 25 lines off. Any ideas on how to work around this problem?

Put your certification in a Text Box.

(Shortly after I started practicing, courts in Wilsconsin stopped requiring things like this. Essentially all that is required these days in my jurisdiction is some sort of caption and 8-1/2 x 11 inch paper. Appellate briefs are a bit more stringent, but no line numbering. I am looked on as a dinosaur because I have rule lines left and right in my pleadings.)

I've never created a text box, Charles, but I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

Thank you, Paul, you did suggest that. Although I work with court documents and have used Word for about five years, there are still so many things I have never done -- like create a text box. I've just looked online how to create one, and I'm going to give it a shot. You and Charles are pros! Thanks so much for the help!

The other two are the pros, I am somewhat of an officious dabbler. I know enough to be dangerous.

The term "text box" is used in a couple of ways in Word jargon, much to the confusion of all. The type we are talking about is found under Insert > Text Box.
It is a graphic element or shape and can be resized/rotated.
You can have it with or without borders.

When you are inside a text box a special contextual tab should appear in the Ribbon that you can use to make changes. It is the Shape Formatting Tab and has the same controls as the Drawing Formatting Tab
I would suggest light-gray shading and no borders.
