Default How do I create magnetic poetry style boxes that fit around words?

Hi there,

I'm working on a special book of the correspondence I've had over the years with my wife, as a gift for her. I had an idea to include a magnetic poem I once wrote for her - you know, with those little squares and rectangles with words that you can stick on the fridge? The poem loses most of its charm if I just transcribe it into words, to the point that it's not worth including that way.

I can't print images in that section of the book, but I'm wondering whether I might be able to recreate the blocks around the words to give them the "magnetic poem" effect. Sort of like this (this isn't my poem; just an example):

Imgur: The magic of the Internet

But translated into boxes surrounding the words on Word. Are there different ways/approaches in which I could achieve this?

I noticed there's a feature called "Insert -> text box" and tried that, but it creates a huge box that I then have to manually shape, and it seems like if I'm writing a lot of words and each have to be surrounded by a box of more or less the same proportions/width around each word, this would be a nightmare. Is there a way for a box to just appear around what I'm writing and adjust to the space of it, or even as I type?

It would also be great to be able to add shadows to the box for effect.

Any insight would be really appreciated; thanks so much!

The Text Box is the object you should be using for each word but I would start by first inserting a Drawing Canvas and then adding Text Boxes inside that area.

Once you create the first Text Box, give it the attributes you want and then copy it and paste multiple times before editing the text inside each copy to change the words. Note that clicking inside the box allows you to edit the text but clicking on the border of the box shows a different selection indication and it lets you edit the box attributes (border, shading, shadow etc) and to copy the box.

A different method to try, again with Text Boxes, is to select a poem word and have a Text Box surround that word and to add further formatting as required.
Either method is a laborious one.

In my example below, I have added a QAT (Quick Access Toolbar) shortcut to the needed ‘Draw Text Box’ tool.
My QAT is located below the Ribbon.
This saves a lot of time with not having to continually go in and out of different Tabs and Menus.
Click the image below to see how I have achieved what you want.
It is a short poem, within a document and I have added Text Boxes with colour and shadows to the boxes and rotated then to add a little extra effect.
I have used Word 2019. Your profile shows Office 2010, but the process is the same.

I'm trying this with Word 365, but i think this would work with your version.

Highlight your first word. Go to Insert /Text Box/Draw Text Box. For me at least, the default is a plain fairly tight bordered box with a thin black border and no fill. Check that the box's wrapping is set to "tight". Then highlight the next word and press F4 to repeat the application of the text box. If you have a whole lot of text to do that way, you might want to write a macro.

Another option I can think of might be making a table with empty cells between every other word but that might be awkward to construct.
