How can I get rid of this formatting symbol?
I cannot get rid of this strange vertical line that appears without any reason in my word document. This does not get printed, and does not appear when I send it to a friend's computer. Only in mine.
There is no option in Word that helps me hide it. It is very irritating because it appears several times in a page. Please help me remove it. |

It is the symbol for a bookmark.

You could remove the bookmark but I presume it is there for a reason.

Thanks! It worked. I had turned it on a few months ago under the impression that it will automatically open all word documents with the bookmarks (headings) displayed on the left.

What you were looking for, I suspect, was the Navigation Pane. It is available under the View tab.

The terminology in Word is different to that of Adobe Acrobat. In Word, the "Navigation Pane" shows the headings as a clickable, nested list. In earlier versions of Word, this was called the Document Map.
Pretty much the same functionality in Acrobat is known as "Bookmarks". However, in Word, a bookmark is a way of (invisibly) tagging a location for other features to make use of.
