Default Outline numbering for a PointHeading3 style does not restart after the next use of PointHeading2

I made a template (Pleading - Superior Court.dotm) which contains a bunch of styles, including the following heading-outline styles that I made:
PointHeading1
PointHeading2
PointHeading3
PointHeading4
PointHeading5
PointHeading6
PointHeading7
PointHeading8
PointHeading9
PointHeading2, for example, uses roman numeral paragraph numbering, and appears like this:
I. Fusce posuere, magna sed pulvinar ultricies, purus lectus malesuada libero, sit amet commodo magna eros quis urna.
PointHeading3 uses alphabetical paragraph numbering, and appears like this:
A. Fusce posuere, magna sed pulvinar ultricies, purus lectus malesuada libero, sit amet commodo magna eros quis urna.

B. Fusce posuere, magna sed pulvinar ultricies, purus lectus malesuada libero, sit amet commodo magna eros quis urna.
My problem is that, after I employ PointHeading2 again, as follows:
II. The Next time I use PointHeading3 below, the outline "number" should be "A" instead of C.
But when I next apply the style PointHeading3 to the next paragraph, it will be "numbered" C as follows, instead of A:
C. Fusce posuere, magna sed pulvinar ultricies, purus lectus malesuada libero, sit amet commodo magna eros quis urna.
As I said above, the last paragraph should have been numbered A.
I would appreciate it if anyone could help me understand the problem (i.e., why the numbering for PointHeading3 doesn't restart at A after my second use of PointHeading2), and also point me to URLs where I could learn how to fix the outline numbering for PointHeading3.

I posted a copy of my template at this URL "Pleading - Superior Court.dotm" in case someone has the time to look at it. The "numbering" problem is highlighted in yellow on page 4 of the file.

Thank you in advance for any info or suggestions.

Marc

I moved your question to the general Word forum from the vba (programming) forum. Here is a link to the moved thread.

Take a look at How to create a table of contents in Microsoft Word by Shauna Kelly.

It will show you the best the way to fix your numbering.

Once set up that way, it is up to the settings in the style for the style for following paragraph.

p.s., I'm a lawyer.

This is collaterally related. You likely have way too many list styles in your document.

Additionally:

To make a placeholder for user input, you need to learn to use Content Controls, possibly mapped content controls.

Another possible option is macrobutton fields. See also: MacroButton Prompt Add-In.

VBA thoughts
This would be properly addressed in the vba forum but has nothing to do with your question. It does have to do with your template.

The macro in ThisDocument AutoNew should likely be a Document_New procedure instead.

I'm not sure why you are using a userform to get a folder and document name. You are reinventing the wheel. In my opinion, it is very intrusive to workflow. You could be simply using the SaveAs dialog. However, simply creating a new document will mean that your user will need to choose a folder and path without doing anything. If you want help with these points, do ask in the vba forum.

You do have your Headings 1-9 properly set up.
Your custom heading styles are not. Again: How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly
That article shows the only way to use automatic list numbering on documents that are likely to be edited, especially by different people.

See also Why use Microsoft Word’s built-in heading styles? by Shauna Kelly.

For other options that do not use list numbering, take a look at Numbering in Microsoft Word. Especially look at the SEQuence Field.
