Default Word creating indents not indicated in the ruler, styles, or hidden characters

Hello,

Occasionally when I copyedit documents, I find that lines in a paragraph (other than the first) are indented for no apparent reason. I have a first-line indent set and there's no line break or paragraph break that I can see.

I've attached several screenshots. Lines 3, 4, and 5 of the text should not be indented. I also noticed that it seems when I change the number of characters in the first line as shown in the second and third attached screenshots, it changes the indents in the rest of the paragraph.

I appreciate any insight you can offer.

The third picture shows paragraphs that all comply with your ruler settings since the indented lines are all first lines of a paragraph.

The first picture looks like it is indicating that there is a white box sitting on the page that the text is wrapping around. If the issue appears on multiple pages then that shape could be in the header or footer.

Are there tracked revisions in the document?

These look like something that has tracked changes inline with a tracking line on the left.

The ruler settings are by paragraph, not for a page or a document. If you want, post a sample document with the problem. How to attach a screenshot or file in this forum.

Charles appears to be on the money and it does indeed look like there is a tracked revision there.

So if you can't find or select the shape causing the text wrapping, change your revisions view settings so you can see the deletions and the additions.

When you track deletions, Word treats them as if they are still there but hides them from view. This can cause confusion with sequence fields and removed section breaks for instance. I would guess that floating graphics tracked as deletions could also cause oddities like this.

Ultimately, you would need to post a sample document rather than just a photo. We can only guess at things from looking at screenshots.
