Placing Headings in multiple Columns
Hello,
I have been trying to wrap my head around styles with varying degrees of success. One thing I am trying now is to place a bunch of headings in columns. I am coming up with a Genre list and a lot of them have sub-genres. If I list all of these in one column the document gets unruly. I would like to place the subgenres in columns to save space but also be able to navigate them in the Navigation pane. I tried doing this by making a List Bullet based off a heading style but no matter what I try, when I make the list a heading, it will not list them in three columns that I am defining, but rather everything on the first column, even though I can see the ruler defining the columns. I tried inserting breaks but that did not help. I know I am doing something wrong. Any advice on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

4. Use Tables and Tabs to Arrange Text in Microsoft Word
I'm not sure I understand. Automatic numbering will not automatically place things in Columns. |

I am basically trying to create a list in 3 columns that is made up of headings. You did give me an idea by using a table and then hiding the grid. But I could not get it to work. Basically I want something like what I included below, but made up of headings. For some reason, if I set up something like this with columns using the Normal Style I will get something that looks exactly like I included. The second I convert it into headings the list will convert to one column. I tried to get the example to look like it does in word but I can figure out how to format on the site. Basically there should be a large space, denoting a column, between Alternative country, Bluegrass & Christian country; and between Americana, Blues Country & Classic Country; and between Australian Country, Cajun Fiddle & Close Harmony.

Are you trying to write a web page rather than a document?
Did you read the first link? The Columns feature in Word is for newspaper-style, snaking, columns. Tables are for parallel structures. You can have heading styles in tables. You can also have non-heading styles that look like heading styles. They will look like headings but not show up in the Navigation Pane nor in a Table of Contents. Why use Microsoft Word’s built-in heading styles? by Shauna Kelly Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 11-17-2020 at 07:13 AM. |

Thank you so much for your help, Charles!
I did read it but must have missed something. I will read it a little more carefully, try some things and report back. |

Ok, so I played with things and am still not getting the results that I wanted. When I change the text in the table to a heading style, it did not show up in the navigation pane. It also changed the table, that was formatted to be two columns, into one column, just as I had previously reported.
I then tried to convert the table to text, but it converted the Heading Style to the Normal style. There must be a way to make a list where the entries can be navigated through the navigation pane |

You are welcome to upload a sample document with the problem here.

As you can see from the screenshots, when normal text is used the table is laid out in 2 columns. As soon as I turn the text into headings, the table converts to one column. In addition, if you look at the navigation pane, the headings are not shown.

I have no hope of seeing what is happening from screenshots. Word files please.
