Default Creating a number style that incorporates heading number?

Hi all. First off, this is a question about Office 2019 in case it matters.

I'm blanking out on how to do this; been away from Word for a couple of years. I want to create a custom number style that precedes with the section number it's in and is appended by "." then a basic numeral counter:

[numbered-heading number].[basic number]

And of course I'd like this to work with any level of numbered heading. I cannot remember if this kind of thing is done using a formula or by some other way.

Attached is an illustration of what I want to achieve:

Thanks. I played it it a little over the weekend but that page seems mainly to talk about numbering the headings correctly. (I used this page a few years ago when setting up the headings for this same template I'm working on now.) I don't want to modify my headings; they're fine as they are. I only want to create a new numbered-list style that begins with whatever section number the list is in.

I feel like this ought to be achievable using a built-in field code. Something akin to { SECTION } except instead of showing the current doc section, it would display the numbered heading directly above. But maybe that's asking too much, since not all headings have numbering anyway.

The solution is probably on that instruction page right in front of me. I will keep plugging away.

That is how multilevel lists work.
You certainly could use the { Section } field. You might even want to save this as an AutoText entry for re-use, especially if you are using a SEQuence Field as well.

You could also do some fancy programming and maybe get something like what you want, but the easy way is to use the multilevel list.

While Shauna's page uses the heading styles, any paragraph styles can be used.

You can mix heading and "non-heading" styles in the same multilevel list, if that helps.

The important thing is that any style that should reference a higher level in the multilevel list must itself be part of the same list.
