Question Install two versions of Word on the same computer?

Is it bad form to change the Title in the middle of a thread?

Should I start a new thread for this problem?

[Moderator note: It is bad form to switch topics in the middle of a thread. I've created a new thread for this one from the original.]

I was encouraged by Purfleet's comment that older versions of Word could be run under Windows 10. So I decided to try installing the old Word version, the one with the macro that opens my task management files side-by-side in single Word window.

I happened to notice that that old version of Word, which I had posted about here as Word 97, actually turned out to be Word 2003. So I dug around in my carboard box of old software and found Office 2003.

I popped the CD (or is it a DVD?) into the DVD drive, closed the drive and waited for something to happen. But nothing did.

So I looked at File Explorer and clicked on a folder named "Setup."

Then the hard drive light came on and the disk drive started grinding and rattling and sounding like it was grinding the CD down to a pile of dust. That's when I realized that I had never actually ever gotten around to testing out the DVD drive on this refurbished PC. I'd been too distracted by just trying to find my way around in Windows 10 and Office 2010.

I was afraid to open the disk drive, out of fear that that might interrupt an attempted installation process and leave an unrecoverable mess on my hard drive. So I just let it run, hoping that it would eventually stop clattering away. It took quite a while, but finally it did stop. And while I was waiting for it to stop I noticed a little pop up in the lower right corner of the screen saying something like "Windows Installer needs to restart computer."

That's when I belatedly decided to Google "Can I install two versions of Word on the same computer" and found a page where it said:

Quote:
"If you want to install and use more than one version of Office on the same computer, you must install the earliest version first. For example, if you want to use both Office 2003 and Office 2007 on the same computer, you must install Office 2003 first. This step is necessary because of the way registry keys, shared programs, file extensions, and other settings are managed for each version of.Office, and for the programs that are included with each version."
Uh oh! My PC already has Office 2010 installed, so what's going to happen when I restart my PC? Is it going to make a can of worms out of the two versions of Office?

I'm going to leave the PC turned on, but not restart it until I find out if there's a way to safely proceed, or else to safely back out of this predicament.

I obviously can't guarantee anything on your pc but I had office 365 on my test pc and then installed 2013, then 2010 and then 1997. They all work but you have to find the application as the short cut defults to the newest one.

The only issue I had is that 1997 won't run macros for me

I've run the following in one Windows 10 installation:
  • Word 97
  • Word 2000
  • Word 2003
  • Word 2007
  • Word 2010
  • Word 2013
  • Word 365
At one time, as a test, I had them all open simultaneously. It works. I often have Word 2010 and 365 open at the same time. However, you want a separate user templates folder for each version and probably a separate startup folder. See screenshot below.

You need to set up the folders first and then upon each installation, go into the File Locations options and set the folders for that version. Then run an Office repair for the version you want as your primary version to get your file associations to work with that as a default. I actually use the same workgroup templates folder for each version and most of my startup add-in templates are stored in one of the versions and I use file shortcuts in the startup folders for the other versions. If you do this, you want to make the overall Microsoft System Files folder a trusted location with sub folders also being trusted.

Search for the term “registry hack” on this web page and follow the directions. Use different Word versions together Reminder from Graham Mayor: Do not only attend to the registry hack, but address the problems of shared folders for templates and add-ins or you will have further issues. This is addressed on that page as well.

Note, Microsoft is designating Word 2016, Word 2019 and Word 365 as Word 16 and thus those three cannot be on the same computer at the same time. They all use the same registry.

You can run a repair on the versions, sequentially, oldest, first. No lasting harm done. However, straighten out the separate files first and do the registry hack. Then do the repair, doing the one for your default go-to version last.
Repair an Office application - Office Support

For your older versions, you will need your installation media and possibly your product key for the repair.

I do have an Office 2003 installation CD with a registration key. But when I put it in the DVD drive on my refurbished PC, it made an infernal racket, like the engine room of a tramp steamer, like this:
Flickr
It went on like that for quite a while, but thankfully it finally stopped on its own. I was afraid to hit the eject button on the drive out of fear that I would disrupt whatever it was trying to do.

But after the racket subsided, and I restarted my PC, I could find no evidence of any installation process.

I thought the drive might be faulty, (I hadn't thought to test it when I received the refurbished PC), so I inserted a music CD, and it played fine. (Well, not quite fine, it did make a bit of a clunking sound when I clicked the advance to the next track button on the player app).

So, I'm going to hunt around on the web for Office 2003 installation instructions. I thought all I would have to do was simply put the CD into the drive and it would automatically start the installation process.

These things take me a lot of time these days. I have difficulty sitting up at my PC for more than a few minutes at a time, due to worsening chronic health issues. So if I don't post for a day or two, don't take that to mean that I've abandoned this project. I really do need to get my "new" PC up and running so I can pull the plugs on my old XP and Windows 7 PCs.
