Question Quickparts in dotm are disappearing from docx

Hello, I've got a template with many quickparts included. When I create a new docx document from that template, the quickparts appear, but eventually disappear. Not just when I close the document, but while I have the document open. I have to repeatedly re-attach the template to the document. Why does the template keep getting detached, and how to avoid it?
Thank you!
Terry

That is not normal behaviour so I would guess that you have a macro running that is changing the attached template. What do you know about the Normal.dotm and the addins you have running on that machine?

I would hypothesize that opening Word in Safe Mode would prevent this from happening. If so, you will need to investigate the addins and templates you have running to work out where the code is coming from.

Default Quickparts disappearing

Nothing in my Normal.dotm nor in my add-ins would cause this, but there may be something in the document template itself. I'll have to ask the originator.

I agree with Andrew that this is not usual behavior.

Did you try safe mode?

Is the template with the building blocks a .dotm template?

If so, what macros does it have?

Do you know your way around VBA? If there is code in the dotm template itself that is detaching the template it is likely to contain code along the lines of
ActiveDocument.AttachedTemplate =

Perhaps you could do a search in the code for "AttachedTemplate ="

Thank you for your responses. There isn 't any code associated with the dotm file (not sure why it was made a dotm and not dotx). I've checked the code in our general add-ins and although there are references to "AttachedTemplate =", they are associated with specific templates (not this one) and wouldn't effect it. I'm wondering if it might have to do with working remotely. Today I can't seem to reproduce the problem :/

If the template is remote from the document, that could cause it. Glad you are not experiencing it now, though.

I generally advise storing both Workgroup Templates and Add-Ins (global templates) locally with updates upon login rather than using them from a central location. This is one of the reasons.

If you can, I would save that macro-free .dotm template as a .dotx template. Unless the template needs to have macros, I always store my building blocks in .dotx files. It is cleaner and who knows what security MS or someone else is going to use to block .dotm files in the future.

.dotx Building Blocks holder templates can also be stored in the Building Blocks folder. I know of little reason to do so, though, since that folder location can be harder to figure out than the location of the Startup folder. (At least it is harder for me using vba or to explain to someone remotely.)

Yes, most of our templates are saved on our hard drives. This one is an exception (for various reasons). I'll follow up with the template owner about this and the dotx recommendation. Thank you...
