Question Open Multiple Documents in Single Word 2010 Window?

A couple of decades ago I set up a macro in Word 97 that would automatically open a number of files within a single Word 97 window. These files contained various task management lists, like a things-to-do list, a daily agenda, etc. like this:

My Word 97 Personal Task Manager Screenshot by Will Anderson, on Flickr

Over the years I've kept using that same Word 97 setup on that same old hand-me-down PC running Windows XP because it worked just fine for me.

But recently I picked up a refurbished PC through a program for low-income seniors, and it has Office 2010 already installed on it. I've been trying to set up the same setup in Word 2010, but the menu system in Word 2010 is so radically different from the one in Word 97, that I can't figure out how to get multiple documents to open up side-by-side in a single Word window.

I'd be grateful to someone who could be patient with an old dog trying to learn new tricks and coach me on how this trick is done in Word 2010.

(I know. Support for Word 2010 will be ending in a few days. But I have to work with I have available to me).

Word 2010 will work fine for you, for years, I expect.
However, the ability to have many documents open in the same Word window disappeared with Word 2007.

You can set your Ribbon to display tabs rather than Tabs and Commands and put two or more windows side by side.

Thanks a million, Charles Kenyon, for that speedy, helpful and encouraging reply!

Do you know where I can find instructions explaining how to set my Ribbon to display tabs rather than Tabs and Commands and put two or more windows side by side?

Also, do you think it would be possible to write a macro that would open the same three files each time and display them side-by-side as in your illustration?

Macro: possible? Probably but I would not want to try to write it! I do not know that the macro recorder will pick up positioning Word windows. The minimizing the Ribbon is not, last time I checked, available to vba.

Tabs: Double-click on a Tab and it will hide the commands, or display them if already hidden. When commands are hidden, clicking on a tab reveals them until you move the mouse pointer out of the Ribbon.
Also, Ctrl+F1 will toggle this.

See Minimizing Ribbon / AutoHiding Ribbon / Toggling Toolbars - Article: - by Charles Kenyon for more ideas. Note that AutoHide works only in Word 2013 and later.

Side-by-side: Move your windows to where you want them.

I have never created a Word Macro, so this is a bit rudimentary, but maybe a proof of concept?

I think different monitor resolutions will need different numbers so you need to work out what is best and adjust w for width and h for height as required - my monitors are 1920x1080

You will need to put your file path in at the p variable and the file names in f1, f2 and f3.

Code:
Sub OpenFiles()

Dim l As Long ' left most position
Dim h As Long ' height of window
Dim w As Long ' width of window
Dim p As String 'file path
Dim f1 As String, f2 As String, f3 As String 'file names

p = "E:\" '<----- your file path
f1 = "One.docx" '<----- your left most file
f2 = "Two.docx" '<----- your next left most file
f3 = "Three.docx" '<----- your next left most file

l = 0 '<----- window starting point
w = 250 '<----- your window width
h = 800 '<----- your window height

'File 1
Documents.Open p & f1

With Tasks(f1)
    .WindowState = wdWindowStateNormal
    .Move Top:=0, Left:=l
    .Width = w
    .Height = h
End With

'File 2
Documents.Open p & f2

With Tasks(f2)
    .WindowState = wdWindowStateNormal
    .Move Top:=0, Left:=l + w
    .Width = w
    .Height = h
End With

'File 3
Documents.Open p & f3

With Tasks(f3)
    .WindowState = wdWindowStateNormal
    .Move Top:=0, Left:=l + w + w
    .Width = w
    .Height = h
End With

End Sub

You guys are amazing! Thanks for the detailed help.

Thanks, Charles Kenyon, for the tip on hiding the ribbon.

I'll give Purfleet's macro a try and report back on the results. I'm in rather poor health and have difficulty working at my PC for very long at a stretch, and sometimes have to skip PC work entirely for a day or more, so it may take me a while to test this out.

It'll be great if I can get a semblance of my old personal task manager working in Word 2010. If not, then I wonder if I could get Word 97 to work in Windows 10 compatibility mode. But that's probably a question for another thread or perhaps another forum entirely, such as a Windows 10 forum.

Now it's time for my midday nap

I hope all is okay, i have tested the macro in Word 365 and just tested it in Word 2007 - so i dont see why it wouldnt work in 2010.

On my test PC there was a small space between each window, but that PC is a difference resolution, so could explain that.

Office 1997 Will run on windows 10 as well 2007, 2010 & 2013 but i cant get macros working on Word or Excel 1997 - all the others work fine.

Let me know who you get on

Hmm. That's somewhat encouraging. Thanks for going to the trouble of running those tests. I really appreciate that. Based on your experience I think I'll experiment with trying to install Word 97 under Windows 10 and see what happens.

When you tried it, did you use the Compatibility Mode feature of Windows 10?

OT:
I have been frustrated in trying to update the Legal Pleading Wizard because it requires Clippy. That is the only use I've ever seen for that early IA attempt!
