Default Cannot find section break; searched with ^b but it is not getting highlighted

I have a document with around 35 chapters. In between chapter 28 and 29, somehow the section break is happening between the first and second pages of chapter 29, rather than at the start of chapter 29. I have searched for the section break using ^b; for most of the chapters the section break is highlighted and easily visible as I do the search. But at the chapter 28-29 junction there is no section break visible; the ^b search function brings me to the first page of chapter 29 as though there is a section break there, which is expected as there is indeed a section break happening at the bottom of the page. But there is no section break highlighted, making it impossible for me to delete it and create a new section break in the proper place.

Without seeing your document, it can be tricky to diagnose exactly why you are having this problem but it is likely related to one of two possible things.

1. You have a section break sitting in your document as a revision tracked deletion. Word could be holding that section break there until you reject/accept the revision.

2. Your section break could be serving as an anchor for a floating graphic. It is not uncommon for people to set up 'chapters' with floating graphics or artwork which have to be anchored to paragraphs.

To examine your document more closely, change to Draft view as it will enable the Section Break to show up if you have your view options set correctly. Also check to see if there are tracked revisions in your document and if so, make sure you are showing deletions on screen.

1. Not sure what a revision tracked deletion is. I didn't knowingly create any such thing, that is sure.

2. I do not have any graphics in the file, so that wouldn't be the cause.

I have been suspecting that the section break may perhaps be hiding in/obscured by a heading or within a header or footer?

A section break can only reside in the main body of the document - it won't be in a header or footer.

You don't have to have graphics to have floating objects. Do you have text frames in your document?

Did you change to Draft view to look for the section break?

A section break CANNOT be in a header or footer. They are inside sections.
It may be that the section break is at the end of a line, in place of a paragraph break. They can be difficult to spot in that situation.

No text frames in the document yet; will be adding some, but there aren't any yet.

However: the draft view is indeed a perfect solution. I needed to be able to see clearly where the section breaks are, and draft mode puts all the section breaks into ready view.

Thread solved!
