Default MS Word - can I automate page breaks after every 150 words???

Is there a way to program MS Word to automatically insert a page break after every 150 words?

I’m writing a documentary film script where the voice over narration speed is 150 words per minute. So I’d like to format my MS Word document so that each page contains 150 words, that way each page equals a minute of film. How can I do this in MS Word?

If it’s not possible to do this in Word, can it be done in another program like Scrivener?

Thank you in advance very much for your help.

It is relatively simple to do after the fact with a macro. It is difficult to have it happen as you type.

The easiest way to do it would be to define a page size that hold 150 words +/- a couple. You could likely do it with just adjusting your font size.

Hi Charles and thank you for your help. Up to now I’ve been doing it manually, selecting Courier font with narrower margins to get roughly 150 words on each page. But it’s never that precise.

Do you know if the macro can automatically create a page after every 150 words? And what is the macro called so I can look it up. Thanks again.

Hi,

Macros are things that users create to do repetitive things in Word. Word Macros and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) FAQ
There are a lot of macros that other users have written that you can find online, but none for this as far as I know.

You might want to look into teleprompter programs instead of Word.

Word does have built-in commands which often function much like macros, but there is no such Word command and I think a macro like this, which essentially is monitoring every keystroke, would interfere in the functioning of Word. I possibly could write one but it would take me at least a day (I'm not that good) and I frankly do not think the benefit it would give is worth a day of my life.

I think the method you are using is the best one. It gives you the roughly 150 words per page and the idea of 150 words per minute is also a rough calculation.

You have tools built into Word that can help you. You can have the number of words in your document displayed in your Status Bar. It is relatively easy to divide by 150 and figure the number of minutes. You can press Cmd+Enter after every 150 words if you want.

I would be happy to write a macro for you that will add a page break after every 150 words in a completed document.

Hi Charles. That’s actually what I’ve been doing up to now. Taking the total number of words and just dividing by 150 to get the minute total. I actually discovered that for a documentary film script I wrote which was over 12,000 words, if I set the font to Courier 12, line spacing at 1.5, and left and right margins both at 1.5”, I had exactly 83 pages for 83 minutes.

But if you could write a macro that divides any document into 150 words per page that would be so awesome! I think a lot of other people would find such a macro extremely useful. Especially if you could edit the macro or configure it to divide pages into any number of words per page desired. This would be ingenious for documentary film script writers.

Thanks again,
