Default Can't do a "[1]" numbered paragraph number format

Can I overcome Word 365 nasty resistance to format the numbers of numbered paragraphs as [1], [2], etc.? It would accept only (1), (1), etc.

(And why was it important for MS to ruin Word 2003 so badly?)

For a single-level list, you can use Home > Numbering > Define New Number Format. This is basically the same idea as in Word 2003, although the user interface has changed a lot, of course.

If you want more options, make the changes through the Multilevel List dialog box instead.

I think they did it for marketing reasons but they do have statistics that the Ribbon interface is easier for (new) users. Essentially, the old menus were replaced by the Ribbon tabs. You are very late to this pity party. The change happened in 2006.
I bought, but never used Office 2007 because I thought it a step backward. Word 2010 was much better.

You can still use Word 2003 if you have it.

Otherwise, here is a link where you can download the Word 2003 setup to work in Ribbon versions. Search the page for "Classic UI."

It's not the ribbon system that irritates me--it's that many useful features that I used to use routinely are either missing or obscured far down the menu levels or irrationally placed. My Quick Access bar is already full with tools I use frequently which otherwise are buried deep and hard to find because of their irrational placement.

Here's an example of irrationality: Suppose you want to change the size of a text box and you get to the Format Shape panel. There are 3 shape options there, one has an icon that looks like the right one, but no sizes there. (Some irrelevant feature do exist there.)

Home (no Format option), select the text box to change (only then you get a Format option, but no format text box) Shape Styles (get the Format Shape panel), select the sizing-like icon: useless, only then see that the size tool is in the ribbon, not in the panel. Why not in both places? Infuriating!

Stefan Blom: There is no Home>Numbering. Anyway, when you get to the numbering format panel it does no allow you to use [], only ().

Sure there is: there is a Numbering command next to the Bullets command. These do not have labels, only icons (and feature descriptions/tooltips). See screen shot.

To get access to all numbering/bullet options, you need to use the Multilevel List command, though.
