Default background for paragraph text only

A one-off task has hit my desk, and I'll probably have a few questions … this morning's is about applying a background colour.
I've entered three paragraphs, each with less than a line of text, then tried the Shading tool from the Paragraph group to set a background colour. The result is a block of background colour the full width of the page, when what I want is a block of background colour only behind the text.
How do I set the background colour behind the text only? thanks in advance.

Home Tab > Paragraph Group > Borders and Shading > Apply shading to Text (not paragraph)

If you want to avoid going to the dialog, select only the text to be shaded, not including the paragraph mark. (You do show paragraph marks when editing, don't you?)

Alas … no Borders and Shading in my Paragraph group, and the Shading tool doesn't include the "apply to" option. The Borders and Shading tab in the Styles dialogues has an "Apply to" pull-down with 'paragraph' as the only option, whether I select the whole paragraph (including pilcrow) or just put the cursor in the paragraph text.

Farther experiment leads to 1) select all text (but not pilcrow); 2) use Shading tool to apply background colour.

All I had to do after that was adjust the leading to suppress the white space that appeared. Required result achieved.

Of courses, interfaces were easier to describe in the good ol' days before ribbons … but in the Paragraph group, I don't see an option Borders and shading. It's an option one level deeper, from the pulldown identified as Bottom border. To mislead me even farther, the Shading tool says it's to "Colour the background behind the selected text or paragraph".
But I'll know for next time :-}

The shading button in the Paragraph group tries to reflect the selected settings at the insertion point, which means that it will be a bit difficult to identify it by the way it looks.
