Default Unable to Delete a Word 2000 Document

I have a Word 2000 document that gives me a "File In Use" message when I attempt to open it. Along with the document are several "~WRLxxxx.tmp" files. Attempts to delete any of these fail, so I saved the original document with a new name and can open that one without any problems.

How do I delete the original document and its temp files?

Restart the computer and see if that lets you delete the files that have been left behind.

In theory, just closing Word should suffice, but perhaps there is a remaining instance of winword.exe which prevents you from deleting the temporary files.
