Default Put a "close brackets" at the end of footnotes

Hi,

I want put a ")" at the end of all footnotes. Using the "formatting reveal" button (or whatever it's called), I can see there is a full-stop, space, and paragraph mark ("¶") at the end of each footnote.

So by putting the following into the Find box:
. ^13
and the following into the Replace box:
). ^13

it should insert the "close brackets". But it doesn't. When I click "Find next" it finds it alright, but it when I click "replace" - nothing happens.

Anyone?

Thanks Charles,
I had already tried that - it does the same thing, i.e. no-thing.

Further suggestions are welcome.

P.S. it does the same whether or not wildcards are selected.
P.P.S - I've tried it on newly created footnotes in a new document as well, so it doesn't appear to be a problem specific to one document. I'd be very surprised if I'm the first person in history to notice this issue. There's bound to be a fairly straight-forward answer.

Are you in the footnotes story when you run the Replace?
Click in a footnote when you do this.

Yes, like I said, when i click "find next" it finds what's in the "find what" box no problem so that the full stop, space, and paragraph mark are highlighted/selected in the footnotes, but when i click "replace" nothing happens.

Are you saying that you've tried putting the codes I've supplied into "find and replace" and tried it on a document with footnotes and it worked fine?

No, John, I'm saying that this is what I expect based on 20+ years of experience using Word and replacing paragraph marks. I did not try to replicate your problem document.

You do not want Wild Cards enabled for this replace.

If you want to attach a document where this is not working, I will be happy to look at it.

That'd be great Charles,

Thanks for your help,

I've tried uploading/attaching an example file.

I've just noticed that in the example file I've sent you, it works on the last footnote for some reason but not on the others. On the other documents I have it works on none of them (the last footnote included).

In your document it worked fine except that I got an extra paragraph mark, probably because it is a footnote. When I replaced
Find text: ". ^p"
with
Replace text "). "
it worked fine. (the quotation marks are not typed)

Here is a temporary link to the document: Dropbox - deleteme footnote replace Test file for Charles Kenyon - problem footnotes.docx - Simplify your life

Sorry for the delay in replying Charles, the internet got cut off.

It certainly doesn't work on my computer. I'll have access to another computer later on - I'll try it on that and let you know how it goes.

Many thanks

Try with Word in safe mode.

Thanks Charles,

I've tried it on both computers, one with Windows 10 and the other Windows 7. Both do exactly the same. "Find" will find/select the area I want changed, but won't make the change when "replace" is clicked. Using safe mode on both computers made no difference.

It only works on the last footnote (regardless of safe mode), but that's not much good of course when there are often about 15 footnotes per page.

When i tried the other computer (Windows 7), i used an entirely new document with no relation to the documents I'd been using on the Windows 10 computer. Inserted a few footnotes into a blank document and tried it - it still didn't work.

(Edit: I said above that it only works on the last footnote, but even that is only true on some documents, often it doesn't work on the last footnote either).

I agree John, it doesn't work for me in the footnotes either. The paragraph mark at the end of each footnote appears to be a protected species (we can find it but can't replace it with another one).

You might need to use a macro to do the task.
Code:
Sub FixFN()
  Dim aFN As Footnote, aRng As Range
  For Each aFN In ActiveDocument.Footnotes
    Set aRng = aFN.Range
    aRng.Collapse Direction:=wdCollapseEnd
    aRng.MoveStart Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=-2
    aRng.Text = "). "
  Next aFN
End Sub

That's great Andrew, thank you very much. I wish I had your knowledge of macros etc.

I'm sorry I haven't replied to your comment on the other thread, I've been very busy, but I will do very soon.

Thanks again.

Did you try my suggestion that does not replace the paragraph mark?

Quote:

Find text: ". ^p"
with

it worked fine. (the quotation marks are not typed)

Note, there is no ^p in the replacement text.

That works for me. In theory, it should be deleting the paragraph mark, but it does not.
