Making sure an overlaid shape stays with its picture
Hi all,
I have a photo in my Word document and I have placed a shape (an arrow) on the photo to highlight a particular part of it. If I want to move the photo to another part of the page (or another part of the document) the arrow is left behind and I have to move it separately. How can I lock the shape onto the photo so that they both move together? Similarly, if I insert a caption onto a photo how can I ensure that the photo and its caption move together? Thanks in advance Robert |

Select both and group them. Grouping should be in a right-click menu as well as in the contextual Ribbon tab. It may be under "Arrange."
If the photo and caption are "in-line-with-text" then have the paragraph formatting of the paragraph containing the photo set for keep with next if the caption is below the photo. Moving a Figure and Its Caption by Charles Kenyon |

Thanks for the reply. However...
With my jpeg image and a shape (the arrow) I cannot select both. If I click on one then Control-Click the other, the first one becomes unselected. The Group option is grayed out, presumably because there is only one object selected. When I tried with two jpegs, I was able to select both, but the Group option remains grayed out. Any suggestions, please. I am using Word 365. (I haven't tried the caption part yet.) Thanks Robert |

Get your items in the same document/drawing level, perhaps using the Drawing Canvas. Are your arrows Word shapes? If not, try Word shapes.
Note, I'm a lawyer and do not work with all that many images on a regular basis. I have successfully grouped shapes and pictures. If you want, post a sample document with the problem after removing any confidential or proprietary information. How to attach a screenshot or file in this forum. |

Thanks again.
The Drawing Canvas method worked fine. Robert |
