Normal.dot Relationship of document and template. Durability of Styles when doc sent.
Simple template question. I get a Word file from someone. I strip all the 'toolbar' direct formatting from it and create a set of styles and use them throughout the document. If I send the document back, will the styles go with it? Will it look the same in their Word? Or, have the styles altered my normal.dot and I have to send that too? (And friend must replace their normal.dot with mine). Please, no lectures on creating new (non Normal) templates, just a simple answer to a simple question.

If you create the document with your own personal style names, they will travel with the document, as long as the recipient has the fonts used. The layout of the document is dictated by the printer driver so there may be changes in format if the recipient doesn't have the same printer.

Adding to what Graham has said:
That may be more information than you need. Point on Word jargon: These days, it is the normal.dotm template, not the normal.dot template. There are times when that is important. |

Thank you, I'll check those, I do have other template issues. Normal.dotm - noted.

Here is my comprehensive (and somewhat disorganized) page on templates.
Templates in Microsoft Word I hope it is helpful with your other templates. Pay special attention to Shauna Kelly's page on the relationship between documents and templates. |

Thanks - I've a very clear idea about what I want to know about templates (I haven't worked with Word for years) and with luck the recommended reading will give me what I want. The official user guide/manual I read years ago generated more questions than it provided aswers. Thanks again to all.
