I am trying to connect a list from SharePoint to a combo box in Word, but cannot find a way to do this. Is this possible?

This is the reverse. I’m trying to use Sharepoint data to populate the data content of a combo box in word.

No, it is actually the same thing. This is a multi-stage process to get it working. Sharepoint creates the underlying framework in the document which you can then exploit in the Word document by adding a Content Control which is linked to the Sharepoint xml element's value.

You need to configure your sharepoint library to have a custom document type so that when you add a Word document to that Sharepoint library, it gets the necessary xml injected into the document. Then you check the document out of Sharepoint and you can add Content Controls linked to that particular xml field.

Once that is done, you put the document back into sharepoint and you can then view the Sharepoint document properties and edit them there which automatically puts the value of that field into the CC already in the document.

When the document is set up correctly, you will be able to edit the 'fields' either in Sharepoint OR in the document via the linked CC.
