I am working in a document with a coworker. I can refresh the TOC, and it updates just as it should. Unfortunately, when she refreshes the TOC, the page numbers disappear. She has verified that "Show page numbers" is checked. We have also verified the tab stops are correct. Everything appears to be in order. The TOC was working for her at one point, then during a refresh, this began happening. Anyone ever had this problem? I would welcome your suggestions on how to fix.

I have seen your issue once or twice over the years and second your question.

In the meantime, a potential workaround might be to create a fresh TOC. I have found it better to create the TOC using the References, Table of Contents, Custom Table of Contents option, rather than Word's autogenerated one, which places the TOC within a clunky content field. (I believe this is what I did, but you were smarter to post to the forums--hope someone has a solution for you, and good luck!)

Check if the table of contents could be inside a container where it doesn't quite fit (such as a table cell). Recreating the TOC (via References > Table of Contents > Custom Table of Contents) so that it doesn't reside inside a content control is often a good idea, as PrincessApril has already suggested.

Thank you! I will definitely try those suggestions. This has me baffled.

If you can't work it out, remove any sensitive information from the file and post a sample doc on this forum. It will have a simple solution but we might need to see the file to work out what is going on.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions. I appreciate all of them. It turns out that she was having strange problems with Excel and PowerPoint. Our IT department re-installed Office, and that resolved the TOC page number problem. (Unfortunately, it did not resolve the Excel and PowerPoint problems.) Thank you, again!
