Inconsistent setting of space before heading
I have set the Heading 1 style in a document so that there are 40 points of space before the heading. Each appearance of the heading follows a section break (next page). However only at a few of the Heading 1s is the space above the heading actually inserted. In others, the heading appears immediately under the header without any space in between. Why is this and how can I make the space before the heading always get inserted? |

Those instructions say that the problem only occurs after a page break and not after a section break, but I am getting the problem some of the time, but not all of the time, after section breaks.
EDIT: I've just noticed that the white space is displayed correctly when, with pilcrows etc displayed, there is a little black square just to the left of the beginning of the text (see image). What does this little black square mean? I can't work out how to insert the image. Here is the link Microsoft services EDIT AGAIN: With the headings that don't display the preceding white space, the little black square appears, but to the left of the space below the heading rather than on the same level as the bottom of the heading. I've noticed that when the white space above is displayed correctly, in hidden markup view there is a little black square just to the left of the heading text, as in this image:
little square.jpg - Google Drive When the white space above doesn't get inserted, the black square appears to the left of the white space below the heading, rather than to the left of the heading text. What does this black square mean, and how do I make sure that it ends up in the right place? |

I've tried adding a frame to the formatting, but all that happens is that the headings that already displayed the white space correctly appear in frames with white space both below and above, but those that didn't display correctly now appear in frames with white space below, but not above.

How to attach a screenshot or file in this forum.
It is not just after a page break but any time at the top of a page other than after a next-page section break. I would suggest a sample file with examples of correct and incorrect behavior. |

Thanks for the reply.
I finally found the answer: Make sure there is no pilcrow (end-of-paragraph) between the last printable character of the preceding section and the section break. Then the space before the first paragraph after the section break will be rendered. |

Glad it works for you. This should make no difference.
Are you using a "Next Page" or "Odd Page" or even an "Even Page" section break, not a continuous section break? |

At first I had next-page section breaks, and one by one, after a lot of messing about, I got most of them working the way I wanted, but without understanding why. Then I realised I would be better off with odd-page section breaks, which took me back to square one, but also finally enable me to see what was going on.
