When I modify a heading style, why aren't the changes applied over the whole document?
I have been trying to tweak a heading style. Why do I only see the changes applied to one occurrence of the style, and not to every appearance of the style in the document? Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 07-15-2020 at 08:16 PM. Reason: add word "heading" to title |

Probably because you modified the text rather than the style.
Go to the one you tweaked and right-click on the style you used. Choose to update the style from the typing. Importance of Styles in Word Why use Microsoft Word’s built-in heading styles? by Shauna Kelly |

No. I definitely modified the style. When I go to other occurrences of the style in the document that haven't updated their formatting and then select anew that same style, the formatting gets corrected.

Perhaps you applied the non-conforming styles as linked styles.

The document I have been working on is just the content of a Wikipedia article that I have been trying to format as an assignment for a course I am doing, so if I delete a few images from it to keep the size down I can safely upload it.7x10 portrait - doc back to docx - Copy.docx
The title of the document reflects that fact that I had to convert it from docx to doc and back again to resolve another problem to do with importing it into another application. |

So, which style is not updating in the text? Where are the problems showing up?
Converted files are ALWAYS difficult to edit. |

At some point I seem to have fixed it, but I'm not quite sure what I did. It may have been when I checked the box "always update" after I had opened the style for editing. Would that be right?

For most styles, you do NOT want that checked, and it should not have made an update you saved to a style update. That checkbox is if you apply direct formatting to text in a style then the style will be changed.
I keep it checked for my TOC styles and that is about it. (I had been keeping your document open on my computer. I can close it now. Glad you got it fixed.) |

You can right click on the style box in the ribbon and select all instances of the style, then left click the same box to ensure that the update takes effect. I think you might have mentioned this in a post earlier today, so my apologies if that was you--just mentioning it for future reference though if others visit, as I've had the same experience.
