Question Print not-printable characters

Dear all, in order to perform editing from paper, I need to print my huge document with all of not-printable data as {XE...} and other fields etc. It would be also great to have dotted spaces and ¶-characters. Could you be so kind to tell how can I print the document as I see it when this button is pressed ? Thanks a lot in advance.

There is no function in Word to do that.
You can print field codes. This is an option.
I no longer have Word 2003 on my computer so can't point you to the exact spot.

Here is a web page that has suggestions: Printing Non-Printing Characters (Microsoft Word)

There are macros out there that actually replace the non-printing characters with real ones that print (and are in the document). I'll see if I can chase one down.

No luck on finding a macro.

Here is the MVP page on finding and replacing such characters. You could do that with symbols that look the same. With tab characters and paragraph marks you would also want to not simply replace the marks but supplement them.
Finding and replacing non-printing characters (such as paragraph marks) and text formatting

I would strongly recommend using screenshots instead.

Thank you for your thoughts. Screenshots will hardly work for me, because document is 700 pages long. So I will keep looking for solutions.
Later Word versions also do not have anything for this? I had find later Word somewhere in order to print.

No version of Word does this.

If you replace these with something that prints it is going to not look the same because it will change the spacing and line breaks.

Editing from paper should be about the phrasing, grammar and structure, not about what marks are in Word, in my opinion.

If you get a newer version of Word, be prepared for UI shock. Controls are in different places.

You are totally right, but I also need all the field codes (like XE) to check if I have missed some entries or added ambiguous entires.

You told that there is a way to print with field codes, right?

Oh, sorry, I already found "print hidden text" in options. Thanks.

The print hidden text will print the XE fields but not all field codes.
Under Tools>Options there is an option to print field codes instead of their values. This will change the appearance and pagination of your document.

You can also press Alt+F9 to display field codes instead of results. When displayed, those will print. This is a toggle setting, remember to toggle it back.
