Angry Footnote graphic prints at top of page

How can I get the graphic to print where it belongs, at the bottom?

I was able to get a tiny graphic image to be in a footnote, along with one line of text. But on print preview, and when printed, the graphic appears at the top of the page, while the footnote number (of course) and text print at the (chosen location) bottom.

I had the the bottom margin set at .3" (top .4"), so I tried increasing the margin. Even at 1" on the bottom, the graphic refuses to be printed there. I made a smaller graphic (30x23 pixels). When pasting, I see the footnote divider line move up to make room for the about 2 line height of the image, but it still prints and previews at the top. Finally, I entered extra text to make the footnote two lines, then 3 lines, but still the graphic stays at the top.

I could find no 'format footnote' dialog to adjust size of area used for footnotes.

Is the graphic floating or inline?

I am not sure. I created and entered the text into a footnote, re-positoned the cursor to the beginning of the line then pasted in the jpg.

Your question suggested to me I might caption the image instead of the footnote text, but internet instructions did not match my menus and I could not. I tried adding a caption in Preview and got a 'wrong!' beep. When I selected the image in word, I could not find an add caption option.

On a Windows machine, we can right click on a picture and choose to Insert Caption.

On a Mac, I assume you Command Click on the graphic for the similar command.

I guess I need a mac person to help me.

Selecting the image gives me several sub-menus but none to enter text. When I select the image, most menu selections are greyed out including 'text wrapping.' The 'format picture' option does gives just cropping control and image control (bright, contrast, etc.).

Lightbulb Created jpg with caption, still prints at top!

I thought to simplify the problem by 'inserting' the text into the image. In Preview, I pasted the image and added the caption and exported it to a new file.

In Word I Insert>Object>From File, then resize inside of Word2008. While the screen version shows the footnote at the bottom of the (first) page, again:

The Preview and Printed Version Still Prints the Footnote At The Top Of The Page, but the footnote number and divider line above it are properly positioned at the bottom.

I've done all I can think of. Can anyone help? With 125 views, I wonder what is wrong with my question that it is not producing mac-specific responses.

It is likely that pretty much everyone who views this thread doesn't have the same version of Word as you. Most users of Word are using Windows and the fact you are using a version that is 12 years old puts you in a very thin demographic. The Mac version of Word is a poor cousin of the Windows version and features that Windows users take for granted don't appear in the Mac version.

But all is not lost, there are plenty of resources to help you insert captions in Mac Word
Let me google that for you

Thank you Andrew for your suggestions and link. Since it appears okay on screen while creating, but has problems when trying to print, my thinking now is it is a printer issue. I have an HP Envy Photo 7855 which allows for really thin margins, so it should work as it is. I'll try and give them a call tomorrow.

I actually added text into a jpg and saved as a jpg, so now there is no text to consider.

I'm pretty sure it is not your printer driver but you could check it by printing to PDF since that will be another printer driver to test against.

I can't work out what you are doing that involves footnotes and captions at the same time. If you wanted to post a sample document here I could take a look and explain what the problem is.

I heard back from my friend again who has Word for Mac 2011. He says it prints at the bottom.

So I'm ending this thread with the observation that it (probably) is a Word for Mac 2008 bug. I'm retired and really can't upgrade. I can hope the recipients use later versions of word processors.

Thanks for attention.
