Strange dots in the footnote section
When I create a footnote in the Page Layout view, I get weird dots above the footnote text (see attachment). I can delete the dot in front of the text, but cannot bring the cursor to any of the dots above. Can someone show me how these dots can be removed and prevented in the future? I don't see these dots in the Web or draft view.
I am using Word 2007. Can't upgrade because new Office doesn't support color in high contrast mode. Thanks a lot. |

Could the Footnote Text style have acquired bullet formatting? Display the Modify Style dialog box for Footnote Text. In the dialog box, click the Format button and then click Numbering. Click to select "None" even if that option already appears to be selected. Confirm with OK.

Thank you, Stefan, for your quick answer. I modified the footnote text style as you advised. Now the bullet before the footnote text stops appearing, but those above are still there, and I can't do anything about it.
By the way, I opened the footnotes format box and saw "Custom mark" has a dot (see attachment). I tried to delete the dot but it couldn't. Can this be what's causing it? One thing I must say is that in this particular document all paragraphs are dotted, and Normal style is dotted as well. I think this is somehow causing this error because I don't get these dots in the footnote when I create one in a new document. |

If you click inside a footnote and press Ctrl+Shift+S, which style name do you see in the Apply Styles pane? Usually, the style name would be Footnote Text. Click the Modify button to see the Modify Style dialog box.

Dear Stefan. I did modify the Style, but the problem persists. Please see my revised reply above. I said: "Now the bullet before the footnote text stops appearing, but those above are still there". Also I added some other comments. Can you help me get rid of those dots?

Click inside a footnote and press Ctrl+Q. Does that get rid of the bullet? Repeat for additional footnote text paragraphs.
Note that doing so won't take care of the footnote separator, which seems to have a bullet as well, according to your screen shot. For the footnote separator, do the following: Switch to Draft view (on the View tab, click Draft). Go to the References tab and click Show Notes, which will display the footnote pane. In the drop down, choose the Footnote Separator. Click in the separator and (re-)apply Normal style by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N.

Thank you very much. It worked! The Ctl + Q did nothing, but the dropdown got my cursor to the area so I could delete those dots. Thanks a lot!
