The feature that fixes typos is called AutoCorrect. It does other things as well. It only picks up typos that are in its list, though. See:
Do you have line numbering turned on? Click in one of the obviously misspelled Words that is not flagged. Under the Review tab, check the proofing language. Is it correct? Do you have "do not check spelling or grammar" checked for that word?
