Defining Multilevel list
Please help. I am trying to format a very long manual Using Heading 1, Heading 2, and Heading 3 for the numbering. As you can see from the screenshot, under Chapter 2 the next number is 1.4 instead of 2.1. I need it to look like this (but indented at each level)
(Heading 1) Chapter 1. Introduction (Heading 2) 1.1 Purpose (Heading 3) 1.1.1 Content (Heading 1) Chapter 2. Hydrology (Heading 2) 2.1 Area (Heading 3) 2.1.1 Assumption (Heading 2) 2.2 Discussion (Heading 3) 2.2.1 Assistance Please look at the attached screensnap to help me know how to set this up. You will be able to see the current headings (and the issues I'm having) and the current selections. Windows 10, O365 Word 2019 Thank you in advance. |

And the clue wouldn't be the 'Start at:' setting being set to 4 in your screen shot?

As Guessed wrote, change the "Start at" setting. Also, you should recreate the content of the "Enter formatting for number" box, using the "Number style for this level" option as well as "Include level number from," because the previous level number appears to be incorrectly set.

Changing the setting from 4 to 1 just changes the number to 1.1. I want to set it so that each chapter number comes first. So that it would be 2.1 for chapter 2 section 1. I don't want to go to each chapter and set the multilevel numbering. Is there a way to set it so that at each chapter the first number updates?
I figured out that I needed to disconnect it from a template (it was not using "normal") and define the multilevel settings again and then remove formatting from some areas and reapply with the new formatting. Last edited by jcislo; 06-05-2020 at 11:47 AM. Reason: add information |

Thank you. This helps but did not fix it - I think I'm going to have to start at the beginning in learning how to do this. I was hoping for a quick fix, but I think this issue is not an easy fix. I appreciate your time.

In your screen shot, level 2 in the multilevel list is selected. Just delete what's in the "Enter formatting for number" box for that level. Use the "Include previous level number" drop down to (re-)add level 1, type the period, and then choose a number format for the current level. Following these steps should suffice, unless there are other issues with the number format as well.
