Angry Word 2016 Style Problems - It is too much trouble to learn how to use styles.

I have problems with styles in Microsoft Word 2016.

I have created a custom macro-enabled template with a custom file name that is in a custom folder in the "My Documents" folder of my computer.
I have made several custom styles, some of which are unique and some of which are used by the normal template of Word 2016.

In several documents that have been explicitly created from the custom macro-enabled template that I have created, I have created and modified many styles with names used in the normal template of Word 2016.

  1. Now, when I create a new document from my custom macro-enabled Word 2016 template I cannot use a style that I created in other documents based on the same macro-enabled Word 2016 template and for which I have consistently ticked to make available in the custom macro-enabled Word 2016 template that I use to create these documents, i.e. the style is added to the template of the file.
  2. The style name is greyed out in Microsoft Word, so I cannot apply it. I can delete the style, but I cannot create it because "the style name already exists or is reserved for a built-in style."Do I need to edit the normal template and explicitly delete the style from there and then recreate the style within the custom macro-enabled Word 2016 template that I have created? How do I know that the style will be available in future documents that I create from the macro-enabled Word 2016 template?
  3. Is there an easy way to explicitly remove any and all normal template styles from a custom style such that Word 2016 can only use styles that I have explicitly created in the single template that the document is attached or with which is associated?
WTF am I doing wrong?

With a macro-enabled template, you are going to want to store it in a "trusted location" so that the macros are enabled. However, that should have nothing to do with ability to use the style.

Let's first focus on the ability to use your style.
When you start a new document, is the style available?

Would you care to share the template and give us the style name?

What type of style is it? If it is a table style, you won't be able to apply it to anything other than a table.

Sigh, these problems are why I stopped using Word around 2003. The problems I have do not seem to be from the template per se; it is how Word gets and shows styles. It's frustrating because I don't know how Word operates. Annoyingly, Word will not save keyboard shortcuts to the template; it appears to be saving them to the normal template or the document itself. I guess I'll have to edit the template directly.

Word's built-in styles can't be deleted. To be more precise, some built-in styles will generate an error message if you try to delete them, while others will not, but the result of the seemingly successful "deletion" is just that the style is returned to its default settings. However, these facts won't affect your custom styles in any way.

Keyboard shortcuts will save to the Normal template by default, but you can choose to save a shortcut to the template attached to the current document (in the Customize Keyboard dialog box).

This may help.
Understanding Styles in Microsoft Word
I hope so, because I've spent a lot of time on it. If you are using Word on a regular basis, reading it will save you time and help you keep your hair.
It is long and started before Word 2003. If you can't read it all, at least read Importance of Styles in Word.

If you are going to continue using Word, you need to get a good grasp of styles. Without that, you will constantly be frustrated.
Here is a shorter article (by a better writer): Tips for Understanding Styles in Word by Shauna Kelly

Default It's been a disappointing program, but I notice that there have been many improvements.

I've had enough. I've authored a sixty-page document, but I'm spending too much frustrating effort changing myself to conform to Word 2016, rather than then Word 2016 changing to conform to me. I'm going back to XML. Thanks to the people who responded

It sounds as if that is a good choice for you. For me, using XML would be a much harder method of handling documents. Good luck.

I am going to close this thread.
