Default Multilevel List Reset

I don't believe this is your normal reset. Searched a bunch of questions and solutions. None appear related to my list.

Heading 1 - Times New Roman (TNR) 14 Bold
Heading 2 - TNR 12 Bold Underlined
Heading 3 - Numbered 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, etc.
Heading 4 - Capitol Letters

My issue lies with Heading 3. I want it to change to 2.01, etc. after the second Heading 2. And, change to 3.01 after the third Heading 2.

See attached "Test" document. The problem Heading 3 is highlighted in red. It continues numbering from the previous Heading 3's.

This has to be set in the Define MultiLevel List Dialog. Do not count on the buttons on the Ribbon. Follow the directions in: How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly

To assign a level to text, apply the style that you set.

Trust me. I researched my issue before creating a new thread. I realize where the list levels are created and modified. And, I have read through S. Kelly's directions a couple times. I cannot find the solution to my problem in it.

I am seeking a specific solution to my problem. Not the blanket read S. Kelly response.

When I create a multi-level list starting with 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 etc. for Heading 1, MS Word will number the following headings as I need. As soon as I remove numbering from Heading 1, headings thereafter no longer number themselves correctly.

Will someone please tell me specifically how to solve this issue provided a solution exists?

Roger:

Did you actually follow the directions there? I think not. I've looked at your sample twice. You have a broken numbering set up. I do not choose to spend my time fixing it. If you want to set up your numbering following those directions, I will be happy to tweak it.

I am willing to help you but I am not going to be able to do your work for you. You may find someone else here willing to do it for you.

Your sample doc uses lower level headings as well so you need to configure the complete list in one go.
If neither H1 nor H2 are showing a paragraph number but H3 needs to reset after H2 then you can associate H2 with Level 1 of the list and give it no number. Then for Level 2, include H2.01 as your list element and tell it to restart after a higher level. H4 can then associate with Level 3, restart and be just the capital letter.

In your example document, if I click in the very first Heading 1 paragraph and then click Home > Multilevel List > Define New Multilevel List, it becomes clear that numbering is broken, because there are no associated styles in the list format (and the list format does not display correctly in the dialog box). You will have to start fresh.

OK, so I am a liar now. I am not asking anyone to do my work for me. Just seeking help which I expect from a forum. You obviously have enough time to tell me you don't have enough time. Fine. No need to reply to me anymore.

Providing me with the "broken numbering list" term is a good start. I am searching for solutions to that problem.

Will someone other than this moderator please tell me if it is possible to keep Headings 1 and 2 unnumbered and have Heading 3 renumber itself based on the prior Heading 2? I am gathering that it is not possible as MS Word.

If you want level 3/Heading 3 to include numbering from level 2/Heading 2, you must add numbering to level 2. However, you can format the level 2 number as hidden so that it doesn't actually display in the level 2 heading paragraphs.

Thank you Stefan. I am getting the results I wanted.

In Define New Multilevel List, I must change the "Include Level Number From" value to Level 2. Change the "Enter formatting for number" to match the format I want. And, change the "Follow number with" to nothing.

In font, I hide the level list numbers that I don't want to appear i.e. Levels 1 and 2.

THANK YOU !!!! That is the help I needed and was seeking !!!!!

Why do some of the numbering associate with earlier lists instead of the one above it.

For example, I will get 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 where 4 originates from a list above that ended in 3. It should be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Same happens with letters.

You have to go back to the list and verify that all settings are correct. Click in the very first Heading 1 paragraph and set up the numbering from the start, define number formats, add higher level numbering as required, and (re-)assign heading styles. This is going to be time-consuming, but once it is done it will be stable.
