symbol and text as bullet
I'm trying to get a numbered list like below, where the smiley is a Webdings symbol followed by text and a number (the number should increase).
Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: I found a thread of 2013 which said it was not possible, but maybe things have changed since then. All suggestions are welcome. Chris |

I did not find that particular icon in webdings.
However, I recommend reading: How to control bullets in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly You can define a new bullet on the bullets dialog, but I think, long-term, you'll be happier with Shauna's method of linking to styles. |

I've been using Word a long time and I've never seen this requirement before. It doesn't look like it is possible via the Multilevel List dialog and I'm pretty sure it isn't possible via VBA either.
If you were going to do it then I would suggest you use a list Bullet or Picture Bullet to give yourself the smiley face automatically and then manually add the text "Step " and then a Seq Field to get the number.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. I'll look into Shauna's link.
It seems I did not make myself clear in my question. The smiley is just a replacement of the bullet. I've attached two images to show what it should look like. |

I am sorry. I misunderstood. I do not know how to do this with regular or multilevel lists.
I apologize. Text and a (picture) bullet do not work in Word in such lists. Shauna's page is worthwhile, but it will not tell you how to do it. You could use a SEQ field stored as AutoText. Not as straightforward, but it would get you the text you want. Here is a link to a template with this. (You need a template for the AutoText.) Template Zip File with Template |

Hi Charles
This does indeed give you the possibility to make bullets like the one I want. Unfortunately it doesn't update the number when i.e. I delete step 2. Step 3 remains step 3 instead of becoming step 2. Since I'm doing this in a template for other users, I think I will stick to changing the numbering manually. I think having to type the autotext and F3 will be to difficult/confusing to some of the users. Nevertheless, I learned something new again and might use it in personal templates. Thanks for your help. |

It will update to the same extent other fields update.
Ctrl+A followed by F9 will update them. You can just select and update as well. You can use a keyboard shortcut for an AutoText entry. If they know the name of the entry, AutoComplete will let them insert it with the enter key once they've typed the first four unique letters of the name. I've updated the sample template to include a keyboard shortcut of Ctrl+0. |
