Default Combined file stuck in draft view

I need to combine files to capture all the redlines and comments from different versions of a document. When I combined a fairly new (saved last month) file with an older one (from 2017), the resulting combined file is stuck in draft view and will not go back to print view. Both original files open and display in print view just fine -- it's only the combined file that has the problem.

I'm guessing that something is corrupting the combined file, but I can't figure out what. The newer file was created in Word 2016 and the older one was created in Word 2013; could that be causing the problem? Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem?

How did you combine the two files? If you just used copy & paste, try recreating the combined document.

I combined the files using Word's built-in combine function (Review tab-Compare arrow-Combine option).

Update: I went into the "corrupted" combined file and started accepting formatting changes (since I don't specifically need those redlines as much as I need the content change redlines), and after I accepted a couple hundred changes the document began to behave better. I was able to change it back to Print view, and everything else seems to be working correctly again. So now I think it wasn't actually corrupted, just overburdened with tracked changes.

So it looks like the problem is solved.

Turn off the Formatting markups:

Go to the Review tab, click the Show Mark up button and de-select Formatting.

Then go to the View tab and click Print Layout.
