Default Indexing

When indexing words in Word, indexing can be controlled by turning on the Formatting button. (Show hidden formatting marks button)
Now you can see that a word is indexed by XE in front. This XE bracket takes up space and causes the layout to move. I work in a document with approx. 650 pages and more than 3000 indexes and this means that my document will be more than 100 pages larger as long as the formatting button is turned on.
Suggestion: When indexing the word must be highlighted, could you not use this selection to colorize the word instead of adding this XE selection which destroys the layout?

This is a user-to-user support forum. Nobody from Microsoft is likely to see your post.

This is how indexing has worked since Word 97.

You can make suggestions using the Feedback mechanism in Office or by posting on UserVoice. UserVoice Word for Windows
The developers who can make changes in Word do see those.

You can control whether the Index entries display by toggling Word's hidden text display on/off; you don't have to have all other formatting marks hidden. Word 101.

Introducing the colourizing of indexed words is liable to confuse users who are familiar with how Word has worked for decades and would not be backwards compatible.
