Default Word count discrepancy

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to work out the accurate word count of a section of a document. The dialogue box says one number, but the bottom margin of Word itself says another. The two numbers are pretty different - see screenshot.

Does anyone know why this difference is happening and which one is right

Thank you!

You appear to be looking at the stats from two different documents: one has 289 pages; the other has 357 pages.

They are the same document - I've highlighted the text which needs to be counted, which is a large percentage of the entire document, but not the whole thing. So the whole document is 357 pages - the highlighted section is 289.

In theory, as I understand it, both the dialogue box and the first word count at the bottom of the doc itself (the 'x' in x of y words) should show the number of highlighted words. Why are they so different? Any response appreciated!

Thank you.

Admittedly, I'm working on a PC, but the word count I see on the status bar and in the word count stats dialogue are the same - and match what I get via a NUMWORDS field.

I do note, though, that the stats dialogue on the Mac doesn't give you the option to include textboxes (which the PC version explicitly includes via the 'include footnotes and endnotes' checkbox), so that may account for the difference.

Ah - that may very well be it! There are a lot of tables and textboxes in this document, so I think that might be the answer - I suspected it might be something along those lines.

Thanks, that's really helpful.
